Don't Kill them + Feed them = Abundance of Earthworms 🪱

Don't Kill them + Feed them = Abundance of Earthworms 🪱

You might remember this field from our abundant cabbage harvests this year. After the final pick, we simply mowed the remaining residue and didn’t disturb the soil life with any equipment.

There’s still a very thin mulch layer on these beds, with just a few weeds here and there. By avoiding cultivation, we didn’t give the weeds a chance to germinate and take off. The result? Soil teeming with worm activity - including visible air-filled pores and earthworm castings on the surface. 🕺💃

The porous, friable structure you see in the photo allows for quick water infiltration and supports strong root growth - perfect conditions for our next crop: celery, which we’ll be planting in about two weeks. 🌱
