Buckwheat is not really a grain at all! Buckwheat is the seed of a flowering annual plant, and is called a pseudo-cereal. Its hulled seeds are grain-like, each with a cute 3-sided distinctive triangular appearance with pointed corners. Buckwheat has the botanical name Fagopyrum esculentum. It is often grown as a good cover crop. Our groats are currently grown in an isolated valley in China, close to a water catchment area, so it's totally free from any sprays or chemicals. Our buckwheat is organically certified, but we are hoping to source locally grown NZ buckwheat next season!
Despite its name, buckwheat has NO relationship to wheat. Buckwheat is a GLUTEN-FREE seed, whereas wheat is a gluten grain! Our buckwheat is gluten-free and the groats we use at Organic Flour Mills are always organic. We pack our buckwheat groats in our gluten-free millroom, to avoid any cross-contamination with gluten.
Please store all grain in a COOL place - preferably in fridge or freezer.(This will prevent any possible weevil infestation!)
Buckwheat comes to you hulled into buckwheat groats, and can then be sprouted, or it can be soaked and dehydrated in the sun or on low heat into bukinis. Great for coeliacs or anyone - including you!Buckwheat is good to eat and healthy when soaked and eaten raw, (eg: sprinkled on your breakfast), or milled into flour.
Buckwheat is totally gluten-free and is high in fibre, B vitamins, and some of the essential minerals. Buckwheat is also a complete protein containing all 9 amino acids (just like our quinoa) and is very low in fats, as well as having a low GI (Glycemic Index) which enables it to be used to control blood sugar, making it popular with diabetics and everyone. Buckwheat is a healthy addition to any diet, whether you are coeliac, gluten-free, or not. Why not try it today?
